Piece of cake, for the second time – a visual message from kids at Metelkova
10 years ago, children from Ljubljana's Kindergarten Vodmat drew graffiti for the first time on the areas of Metelkova where graffiti is allowed. In the children's exuberance and joy in creating the 'Green Meadow', they also reached into the forbidden area, where they did not touch the immaculate façade, but 'went over' the various tags to beautify the façade. The mentors were not prevented from the children's self-initiated intervention, were caught in the act and reprimanded for encouraging children to vandalise, but this did not diminish the satisfaction of experiencing this side of street art. More at: Kindergarten Vodmat.
This year, the little street artists tried their hand at graffiti again and presented themselves at the Ljubljana Street Art Festival with a workshop: Piece of cake, for the second time!
Three groups of children from the Kindergarten Vodmat – Švigci, Butterflies and Teddybears – aged between 5 and 6 years old, were involved in a 3-month pedagogical process where they gradually learned about street art, especially the message power of graffiti. In this year’s project, the children explored both the virtual and the real world. Together with teachers and painter-mentor Fedja Šičarov, they created a visual message in Metelkova mesto, highlighting the increasing use of digital technology for children's leisure time and the decreasing use of outdoor play.
You are invited to take a stroll around Metelkova and alongside the “big artist” public art interventions, turn your attention to see how our little ones learn about the world around them through murals.
