Projects
ALKATRAZ GALLERY
Alkatraz Gallery, started in 1996 as a project of students of the Academy Of Fine Arts And Design, is promoting experimental artistic endeavours and is hosting a variety of interactive, research-based and site-specific projects. Located in the heart of Metelkova.
NIGHT DISPLAY GALLERY PEŠAK
Night Display Gallery Pešak is located in the five windows of Metelkova's Pešak building. Artists create specific works combining and exploring classical and contemporary media in order to make effective use of the medium of light.
GESAMTKUNSTWERK METELKOVA
Gesamtkunstwerk Metelkova focuses on artistic interventions in public space within Metelkova and its immediate surroundings. More than 200 public art interventions make up the so-called Metelkova Integrated Artwork, which have been created since 2004.
STUDIO ASYLUM
Artist-in-residence atelier Studio Asylum is also located at Metelkova, and since 2006 it has been hosting visiting foreign and local artists working in the fields of music, visual and intermedia arts. Studio Asylum welcomes its residents for up to three months.
SONOTOPIJA
Sonotopija is a cycle of events exploring the intersections of music, visual art, light, technology, science. It presents artists of electroacoustic, electronic, improvised music, sound installations, visualizations, audio-visual compositions.
FRIFORMA
Since 2007, concert series FriForma – previously known as Džez pri koritu – has been presenting free jazz, improvised and experimental music. The monthly events are often feature commissioned collaborations between international and local musicians.
FRIFORMA\V
FriFormA\V event series, since 2018, has been focusing on the exploration of art forms that intertwine artistic visualisation and light-based art with contemporary sound environments such as sound art, sound installations or experimental music.
RED DAWNS
International Feminist & Queer Festival Red Dawns was founded in 2000 at Metelkova. Its aim is to question the position of women in the inseparable web of art, culture, politics, activism and everyday life. The festival annually happens around 8 March.
DIYNAMICS
Youth programs combine art, recycling, DIY circus, fanzines, and community-based creation, promoting environmental awareness, inclusion, creativity, and mental health among young people through year-round activities and the summer festival Reciklart.
ANIMIRAMO & CHILDREN ACTIVITIES
Since 2011, KUD Mreža has been working with kindergarten Vodmat to integrate contemporary art themes into its curriculum. Since 2016, we have been working with preschool children on the annual project Animiramo where they create stop-motion films.
METELKOVARCHIVE
KUD Mreža has been collecting and preserving archival material about Metelkova since 1993. The archive contains essays, media responses, photographs, video and sound recordings. All amateur archivists are invited to participate: sort or complete the material.
About KUD Mreža
The Cultural and Artistic Association Mreža (KUD Mreža) is the formal successor of the Network for Metelkova, whose supporters occupied the abandoned Yugoslav People's Army barracks on Metelkova Street in Ljubljana in 1993. Over the years, the area has developed into an autonomous cultural centre, which today represents one of the most important hubs of independent culture in Slovenia and has a significant impact on the wider region and Europe.
Since its establishment in 1997 within the Autonomous Cultural Center Metelkova mesto (ACC Metelkova mesto), KUD Mreža has been striving to improve the infrastructural and production conditions of Ljubljana's independent cultural and artistic scene.
The main mission of the association is to support artistic, cultural, and socio-political events within AKC Metelkova mesto and beyond. The association brings together individuals who wish to contribute to the development and connection of cultural activities, arts, architecture, activism, design, science, education, youth work, and the preservation of natural and cultural heritage. The association creates projects that promote artistic, cultural, and social values, aimed at the wider public and its membership.
